A Whole-Home Repipe Without Moving Out
A repipe does not mean a gutted house. We work one zone at a time, open small windows in the drywall instead of tearing out walls, and turn the water back on before we leave for the day. Most single-story Kapolei homes take three to five days.
Almost every homeowner who calls us about a repipe asks the same question in the first minute, and it is never about pipe. It is: do we have to move out? People picture the whole house opened up, plastic sheeting everywhere, a hotel bill for a week, kids and a dog somewhere else. That picture comes from watching a remodel, not a repipe. The two jobs look nothing alike.
Here is what actually happens. The water goes off in the morning and comes back on in the evening, every day, for the whole job. You sleep in your own bed and the kids go to school from the same driveway. Most of the noise happens in a couple of rooms at a time.
What houses out here are hiding
The Villages of Kapolei went up mostly in the nineties, and that timing matters more than square footage or price. Whatever your builder ran through those walls, your neighbors almost certainly have the same thing, installed by the same crews in the same stretch of months. When one street starts calling us, we usually hear from a few more houses on it before the year is out.
Three materials come up again and again. Polybutylene is the grey flexible line with crimp rings, and it fails at the fittings. Early CPVC gets brittle enough after thirty years that a hard bump near a fitting can crack it. Copper fails as pinholes: a slow weep behind drywall rather than a burst.
That last one is the sneaky one. A pinhole can run for weeks before anyone sees a stain, and by the time the drywall goes soft you are dealing with a repair plus a mess. That is why we would rather look at a house before it fails than after.
How to tell what you have without opening a wall
You can figure most of this out yourself in ten minutes with a flashlight. Look under a bathroom sink at the stub-outs, the short pieces of pipe coming out of the wall below the shutoff valves. Grey plastic with a metal band clamped near the fitting is polybutylene. Cream or tan rigid plastic with glued joints is CPVC. Bare metal that has gone brown and dull is copper.
The sequence we follow
We start by mapping the house. Where the main comes in, where the water heater sits, how the lines branch to each bathroom and the kitchen and the laundry. That map decides everything after it, so we do not rush it.
Then we zone the work. A typical Kapolei single-story splits into three or four zones, and we finish one before opening the next. Access is the part people brace for: we cut drywall windows about the size of a sheet of paper where we need to reach fittings. We are not taking walls down. A good repipe is mostly about opening as few holes as possible and still reaching everything.
After that we run the new line, PEX or copper depending on the house and what you want. PEX flexes through framing with far fewer joints, which means fewer places to ever fail, and it is the right answer for most houses out here. Copper still makes sense for exposed runs and for homeowners who simply prefer it. We will tell you which way we lean on your house and why.
Then we pressure test before a single hole gets closed. The system holds pressure while we watch it, and if anything moves we find it while the wall is still open. Only after that do we patch. That order never changes.
Who patches, who paints
This is the question that catches people out after the fact, so we say it up front. We close the drywall. That means the hole is patched, taped, and finished smooth, ready for paint. What we do not do is paint your walls, and we would rather tell you that on day one than surprise you on the last afternoon.
The reason is simple. Matching interior paint that has been on a wall for fifteen years is a painter’s job, and a bad match looks worse than an honest patch. Most homeowners either roll the affected walls themselves over a weekend or have their painter come through after us. Either way you know it is coming and can plan for it.
How long it actually takes
A typical single-story slab home in Kapolei, three bedrooms and two baths, runs three to five days. Day one is mapping and the first zone. The middle days are the rest of the zones and the pressure test. The last day is patching and cleanup. Two-story houses and homes with an addition tacked on take longer, because the runs get complicated and complicated runs deserve more time, not more speed.
One leak or the whole house: the honest answer
Not every leak means a repipe, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to sell a bigger job. A single copper pinhole in an otherwise healthy system is a repair. One CPVC fitting cracked by somebody’s foot in the attic is a repair. We fix those all the time and send people on their way.
The picture changes when the failures repeat. Two or three leaks inside a year or two means the material is at the end of its life, and every repair after that is money spent waiting for the next call. Polybutylene shifts the math sooner, because the fittings tend to go in a wave rather than one at a time. Pressure that has faded across the whole house, or rusty water on the first draw in the morning, points the same direction.

Questions we get about repipes
Do we really get water back every night?
Yes. We shut down at the start of the workday and restore service before we leave, every day of the job. The only exception is a short window on the day we tie into the main, and we tell you that morning exactly how long it will be.
How big are the holes in my walls?
Most are about the size of a sheet of paper, placed at fittings and turns. A three-bedroom house might get eight to fifteen of them. We patch and finish every one smooth, ready for your paint.
PEX or copper for a Kapolei house?
PEX for most homes, because it flexes through framing with far fewer joints and fewer joints means fewer future failure points. Copper still makes sense for exposed runs or if you simply prefer it. We will tell you which way we lean on your specific house.
Can you repipe just one bathroom?
Sometimes, and we have done it. It works when the rest of the house is a different, healthier material. It does not work when the whole house was piped at once in a material that is failing, because you would be paying twice for the same job.
