Why Kapolei, why now
The tract homes out here are all hitting the same age at once.
Most of the Villages of Kapolei went up between the early nineties and the mid two-thousands, putting those houses somewhere between twenty five and thirty five years old. That is right about when the original water lines start telling on themselves. We get the calls in clusters, sometimes three houses on the same street inside a month, because the whole neighborhood was piped by the same crews in the same year with the same material.
What we find depends on the build year. The earlier homes can still have polybutylene, that grey flexible pipe with the crimp rings, and once it starts going it does not stop. A little later and it is first-generation CPVC, which gets brittle after decades and cracks when somebody bumps it in the attic. Copper houses have their own story: pinholes. Our water and the way it sits in a line all day works on copper from the inside, and once you get one pinhole you tend to get another six months later a few feet away.
None of that is a reason to panic, just a reason to know what you have. We look at the stub-outs under two or three sinks, the water heater connections in the garage, and whatever is visible in the attic, and then we tell you straight whether you are looking at a repair or a repipe. Plenty of times the answer is a repair, and we say so.
Living in it
Room by room, so nobody moves out.
The first thing homeowners ask is where the family is supposed to sleep. The answer is here, in your house. We do not open every wall on day one. We take one section at a time, run the new line, close it, and move on, and the water goes back on before we leave for the day.
That means you have a working kitchen sink and at least one shower every single night of the job. Kids get their baths, you get your coffee, and the house keeps running. It takes us a little longer than gutting the whole thing at once, and we think that trade is worth it for a family with school and work schedules.
Most single-story Kapolei homes take two to four working days on the pipe. Two-story houses and the bigger floor plans with three or four bathrooms run longer. We tell you the schedule before we start, and if something in the walls changes the plan we tell you that day, not at the end.
Materials, honestly
PEX or copper, and why we would pick each.
PEX is what goes into most Kapolei tract homes we repipe. It bends around framing so there are far fewer fittings buried in a wall, and fewer buried fittings means fewer places to ever leak. It also shrugs off the water chemistry that eats at copper here.
Copper still earns its place. Exposed runs in the garage, the manifold area, anything that sees sunlight or takes a beating, that is copper work. Some homeowners simply want copper throughout and we will build it that way and do it well.
What we will not do is tell you one material is the only right answer. Both are code, both last, and the honest call depends on your house, your walls, and what you want. We show you what we would put in our own place and then you decide.

The drywall question
Where we cut, and how it gets closed.
Every repipe means opening walls. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you. What we control is how many holes, where they land, and what they look like when we are done.
We plan the access before the first cut, usually low on the wall behind a vanity, inside a closet, or up in the attic where nobody will ever look. Kapolei homes with attic access give us a lot of room to work from above, which keeps the wall openings small and few.
Every opening gets closed with patched and taped drywall, ready for paint. Painting is the piece we leave to you or your painter, since matching an interior color out of a can rarely works, and we say that at the quote so it is never a surprise at the end. Up the hill
Makakilo galvanized is a different animal.
The older homes above Kapolei on the Makakilo hillside came up decades before the Villages, and a good number of them still have galvanized steel supply lines. Galvanized rusts shut from the inside. Homeowners notice it as pressure that has faded so slowly they stopped noticing, brown water on the first draw in the morning, or a hot side that runs worse than the cold.
Those repipes often go quicker because the layouts are simpler and there is less pipe. The catch is that galvanized cannot be repaired in pieces. Disturb one section and the rust inside breaks loose and travels, and you spend the next month cleaning aerators and replacing cartridges in faucets that were fine the week before. When we find galvanized we plan on replacing all of it, and we say so up front rather than selling you a partial job that creates a new problem.

PEX or copper for a Kapolei home?
PEX suits most Kapolei tract homes. It flexes, needs fewer fittings inside walls, and it does not pit the way copper does in our water. Copper still makes sense for exposed runs, garage manifolds, and anywhere the pipe sees sun. We tell you which one fits your house and why, and we are happy to do either.
Who patches the drywall afterward?
We cut small, we cut where texture is easiest to blend, and we close every opening with patched and taped drywall ready for paint. Painting the finished patch is the one piece we leave to you or your painter, and we say that up front so nobody is surprised at the end.
My house is in Makakilo and has galvanized. Is that different?
The older Makakilo hillside homes are the galvanized ones, and those repipes usually go faster because the runs are simpler. The catch is that galvanized breaks apart when it is disturbed, so we plan for full replacement rather than partial. Sediment from a disturbed galvanized line will clog aerators and cartridges for weeks otherwise.
