A half inch supply line under a sink puts out somewhere around six gallons a minute when it lets go. That is a full bathtub every five minutes, running the whole time you are hunting around the side of the house with your phone flashlight, in the rain, at two in the morning.

The good news is that the whole thing is preventable in the same way a fire drill is. You cannot stop the line from failing. You can absolutely decide, tonight, while nothing is wrong, that everyone in the house knows where the valve is and how to turn it.

Where the main hides on a Kapolei house

There are usually two places, and you want to know both.

The first is on the house. Walk to the front hose bib, the spigot closest to the street, and look at the wall right around it. On a lot of the Villages of Kapolei builds and the newer Ewa plain tracts, the house side shutoff sits within a few feet of that bib, sometimes tucked behind a hose reel or buried in a hedge that has had seven years to grow over it. It is either a round wheel handle you spin clockwise or a lever you turn a quarter turn until it sits crosswise to the pipe. If your washer and heater are in the garage, check that wall too, low and near the corner.

The second is the meter box at the curb, the rectangular lid in the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street, usually green or black plastic, sometimes concrete, often with a layer of dirt and grass clippings sitting on top of it that has to be scraped off before the lid will lift. Inside is the meter and, on the house side of it, the valve.

That curb valve is generally not something you turn with your fingers. It takes a meter key, a long T handle you can pick up for a few dollars at any hardware store on the island. Buy one this week and hang it in the garage. A screwdriver and a pair of pliers will work in a pinch and will also chew up the valve, so do not make that your plan.

Lift the lid slowly. Boxes that sit in the grass on the Ewa side collect centipedes and the occasional cane spider, and you do not want the first time you meet one to be the night you are already panicking.

The stops most people never touch

The main shuts the whole house down. Frequently you do not need the whole house.

Every toilet has a small oval handle on the wall behind it, down low on the left. Every sink has two under the cabinet, hot and cold. Your water heater has one on the cold inlet at the top. If the leak is at a fixture, and most are, that little valve solves it in ten seconds and the rest of the house keeps running.

The two minute drill

Do this once with everyone who lives there. Kids old enough to ride a bike are old enough to close a valve.

Take a photo of both locations on your phone. Screenshot it. Text it to whoever else lives there. When it happens for real, nobody is thinking clearly and nobody is reading anything longer than a picture.

The minutes right after you shut it off

Water is off. Now what.

Then take pictures before you clean anything. Wide shot of the room, close shot of where it came from, a shot of the water line on the baseboard. Your insurance company will want them and they will never look as convincing after you have already tidied up.

Then push water away from the walls. Not toward the drain, toward the walls is where the damage lives. Towels along the base of every wall, then out the slider or the front door. Lift what you can off the floor, and get a fan blowing across the wet area if you have one.

Call now or wait for morning

Plain answer. If the water is still running and you could not stop it, that is a call now. If it is off but something is actively sagging, dripping through a ceiling, or coming out near an outlet or a panel, call now. If you smell gas anywhere near the heater, get out first and call from outside.

If the main is closed and the leak is at one fixture you have isolated, that is a fine morning job. You are not saving money by getting somebody out of bed for a stuck toilet stop, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you a night you did not need. About the drive

Straight talk about response time. Kapolei sits at the far end of the H-1 from town. At nine on a Tuesday night that road is empty and we are on your street quickly. At four thirty on a weekday afternoon, coming from a job in Honolulu, that same run can be forty five minutes of standing still past the airport, and no amount of promising otherwise changes the traffic.

Which brings it back to the valve. The minutes between your line failing and anybody arriving belongs to you, and knowing where your shutoff is turns those ten minutes into almost nothing.
